Raised by the Algorithm consists of two static digital collages composed from content associated with the “tradwife” and “manosphere” pipelines on social media. The works examine how algorithmic recommendation systems can gradually move users from seemingly benign lifestyle and self-improvement content toward increasingly rigid gender roles, grievance politics, misogyny, and reactionary ideology. While the collages themselves are static, they represent two distinct pathways through a larger algorithmic ecosystem that continuously adapts and escalates what users are shown.
The tradwife pipeline can begin with familiar content around cooking, cleaning, beauty, or domesticity before leading toward increasingly prescriptive ideas about gender and family. The manosphere pipeline can similarly begin with mainstream self-help content around fitness, finance, or self-improvement before moving toward misogyny, grievance, and reactionary politics.
Raised by the Algorithm considers how these pathways can offer different ideological responses to shared conditions of economic anxiety and social uncertainty, particularly for younger generations. By concentrating these images into dense, overwhelming collages, the work asks viewers to sit with the cumulative experience of repeated exposure.
What happens when the same aesthetics, messages, and values appear again and again? When does something familiar become persuasive, and when does repetition begin to feel normal? The work also invites the viewer to ask why these narratives are so readily amplified, and what it means to grow up within systems that continuously learn from our anxieties, desires, and vulnerabilities.Raised by the Algorithm ultimately asks us to consider not only what we consume, but how the conditions through which we consume may be shaping who we become.
